Web Development Made Easy

Posted by Nathan Giesbrecht on June 29, 2012 in Web Development

Sometimes you just want a simple website designed and developed quickly and easily. Not all projects require hiring professional web development, because some projects are just too small.

This month Mozilla released a service called “Thimble”. As they put it:

“Thimble makes it ridiculously simple to create your own web pages. Write and edit HTML and CSS right in your browser. Instantly preview your work. Then host and share your finished pages with a single click.”

I’ve put together a simple demo page available here. What makes Thimble so nice, from a developers point of view, is that it explains the code that it generates to the user. Most WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) HTML editors will generate functional HTML for you, but when it comes time to edit that code, users are left in a state of confusion, because they don’t know what the HTML tags mean, or how they’re supposed to be used.

Thimble solves this problem by not only generating the code for you, but providing in depth explanations about what each section of code does, and how to edit it. This is very handy for explaining which attributes need to be used for iframe’s, images, and links.

Easy Hosting

In addition to providing users with great HTML mark-up and useful explanations, Thimble also takes care of hosting. You won’t need to buy a monthly hosting plan, because Thimble’s got you covered. No need for Apache configuration, MySQL setup, or changing PHP settings. You simply click “Publish”, and Thimble will give you the URL of your newly created page.

Thimble will also give you a URL to edit your page, so you don’t need to FTP into a server and download files to make changes (and then re-upload). With Thimble it’s as simple as going to your Edit URL and making the changes you want.

Thimble is a great tool for newbie web developers to get simple pages created quickly and easily. At the same time, it helps the developer learn the ins and outs of HTML by providing detailed explanations. Leave your Thimble pages in the comments for others to check out.
